Tiffany Haddish Wore an Eritrean Gown in Honor of Her Late Father to the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet

Tiffany Haddish’s outfit for the 2018 Oscars—her very first Academy Awards!—wasn’t only incredibly stunning, it was also deeply meaningful.

On Sunday night the comedian arrived to the red carpet wearing an Eritrean gown as a tribute to her late father. “My father is from Eritrea, and he passed away last year,” Haddish told ABC’s Michael Strahan. “He said one day I would end up here, and if I ever end up at the Oscars, to honor my people. So I’m honoring my fellow Eritreans.”

The floor-length gown featured a strapless neckline and intricate gold and black embroidery. Haddish topped the princess-like dress with a black jacket that featured matching gold detailing around the edges. She accessorized with oversize gold hoop earrings, rings, and bracelets, and wore her hair in a high braided bun topped with an elegant golden headpiece.

Haddish, who some felt was snubbed by the Academy for her scene-stealing role in Girls Trip, is scheduled to present an award at Sunday night’s ceremony following a hilarious turn as the announcer of the nominations back in January.

She spoke to Strahan about how excited she was to be at the historic Dolby Theatre for “Hollywood’s biggest night”: “It is heaven to me. It’s like a dream come true. I’ve sat and watched the Oscars for years. I always wanted to go, and now I’m here!”
